Big 'Thank You' to Royal Military College Band
On 18 December 2003 new Rugby Choir President Alastair Crombie presented a cheque for $1,000 to the Officer Commanding the RMC Band, Major Craig Johnson. This donation to the Band's Jubilee Celebrations is a measure of the Choir's appreciation of being able to use the Band's facilities for Choir practice.
Radio Fame
The Choir was proud to be asked by ABC Radio to be part of their Rugby World Cup promotion and coverage. The Choir recorded a range of musical segments that were used in various ways during the Rugby World Cup, including a full-on version of 'Waltzing Matilda'. A group of Choir members also appeared and sang on the 2CC Breakfast Show during the World Cup.
Rugby World Cup Involvement
In addition to the Rugby Choir's radio activities, the Choir had a number of other involvements with the Rugby World Cup. The Choir sang at the official Cup launch in Canberra where one of our members, former Wallaby Peter Scott, was recognised. Choir members 'home-hosted' eight visiting members of the World Rugby Choir - this choir comprising a male and female singer from each participating country. The Rugby Choir sang for crowds approaching the Canberra Stadium for a number of the local World Cup games, including the Wales vs Italy game. A number of Choir members formed the 'Campfire Choresters' which was a highlight of the Roy and HG World Cup television show. Altogether a very memorable and enjoyable Rugby World Cup.
Wesley Concert CD
A high quality CD recording was made at the Rugby Choir's Wesley Concert performance on 7 November 2003. The Concert, in partnership with the Wesley Choir and held at the Wesley Music Centre, was a musical highlight of the year. It also enabled the Choir to raise some $1,500 for the ACT Wheelers. Rugby Choir Musical Director Andrea Clifford has already produced a small 'demo' CD that has been used to promote the Choir to the ACT Brumbies organisation, and a fuller version is the follow. No plans for commercial release at this stage.
Super 12 Season 2004
The Rugby Choir kicks off the Super 12 Rugby season on 21 February when the ACT Brumbies take on the Auckland Blues at Canberra Stadium. Recently appointed ACT Rugby Union Chief Rob Clarke has some new plans for game day entertainment, including a new role for the Rugby Choir. As usual, the Choir will be present at all six ACT Brumbies home games, and the semi-final and final games if the Brumbies make it through. The Choir is also planning to go to Sydney for the game against the NSW Waratahs on 24 April.
